Paint sky and clouds

05.08.2009 by Vincik
VIDEO
The clouds are moving and changing their forms. That causes troubles with their representation. However, it doesn’t mean that you have to draw clouds from a photo. The more you have practice painting clouds on location, the more they can be natural. When drawing floating clouds you can get an effect of motion… The camera captures only one moment, the human when he looks at the cloud during some time can mark out the principal type throughout all the watching time… The effect like this exists when you’re photographing the glowing objects with exposure.
Let’s take anyone brush. If you take a smaller size you spend more time, but the result is more detailed. If you take a big brush the result is more quick.

1

Then, using brush "Water rake" you have to spread all till a full filling of canvas by color. It will be lighter at the bottom than on top.

2

With brush "Just add water" cross-hatch top-down and from one side to another.

3

Use a filter "blur".

4

Draw the strokes by white color on (or nearly white)...

5

Set layer with transparency.

6

Repeat that operation (step 6) several times with different colors (white, yellow, blue).

7

Look at that you've done and try to discern the silhouettes of the clouds... You should invent nothing, you should try to see and finish that you haven't drawen yet.

8

Now you have to detect those places where the clouds should be. Than you have to cross-hatch (like in step 5) by white color. After this you need to set transparency for current layer (step 6).

9

Work with brush "Water rake". If you see you have overdone it, you have to reduce transparency of the layer.

10

You can draw color on by the pencil, and than spread it by brush "Water rake".
